5S
Method to organize and structure workstations and elements in order to ensure quality awareness and increase efficiency. 5S was developed in Japan as part of the Toyota Production System (TPS) and consists of the following elements:
Seiri = Sort out; eliminate anything that is not necessary for the operation.
Seiton = Set in order; organize items at workstations following the defined operation, ensure easy access, and eliminate orientation issues.
Seiso = Clean; completely clean the entire workstation, tools, machines, and equipment. Cleaning will also serve to detect and repair damaged items.
Seiketsu = Standardize; once everything is clean and well organized, photograph the station, define a formal process for operation, and transfer this to work instructions that are clearly displayed at the workstation.
Shitsuke = Sustain; define a documentation and reporting system and check compliance of a workstation with the work instructions on a regular (daily) basis.
