Japanese expression for “paper lantern”. In the context of lean manufacturing, andon stands for a visual management method to notify management, maintenance, and other workers in case of problems during the manufacturing process. Usually, the process stops. The alert can be activated either manually (e.g. pressing a button) or automatically. It is visualized by a light, a board, or other displays.
